The Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology wishes to appoint a Laboratory Technician (Chemical) to support the laboratories of this multidisciplinary, busy and friendly department, located on the West Cambridge Site.

You will advise and assist graduate students and staff in their teaching and research work.

This support will include handling and installing gas cylinders, handling cryogenic fluids, and setting up, operating and maintaining scientific equipment, including engineering rigs, and a range of analytical laboratory equipment. The work involves the ordering and handling of chemicals, ensuring a high standard of housekeeping in the labs and dealing safely with chemical waste disposal. You will need good all-round laboratory skills and a good knowledge of laboratory health and safety will be a distinct advantage.

The ideal candidate will already have hands on experience, enabling them to advise on the selection and safe use of chemicals and will be familiar with specialised experimental and analytical equipment and techniques used in research laboratories, enabling them to train and assist research workers and under/postgraduate students to work safely and effectively. They will also cover for other members of the laboratory team, where necessary and for this some knowledge of the procedures for the disposal of biological waste would be an advantage.

The successful candidate will be educated to at least A level, NVQ level 3 or equivalent in a chemical or engineering subject, and/or have equivalent practical experience gained in research laboratories or similar.

They will be well motivated, reliable, be able to work on their own as well as in a team, and be able to give clear instructions to students and researchers.
