Job description

The Centre for Education is the FoLSM school, co-led by the Deans for Life Sciences and Medical Education, that focuses on the education provision of the Faculty, and the academic and professional services staff who design and deliver that education.  

This position offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced educator and researcher to contribute to the advancement of pedagogical knowledge and practice within our academic community. The role requires an understanding of pedagogical theories and a commitment to excellence in both teaching and research and the ability to provide leadership in this area across the centre for Education.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract.

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.

Key responsibilities

  • To work with the co-Directors of the Centre for Education to provide leadership in the area of pedagogical research. To promote and foster a culture of excellence in education across the Faculty by working collaboratively with the Deans of Education, Heads of Teaching Departments and School Education leads to engender a scholarly approach to education.  
  • To work with Reader in Faculty development with particular emphasis to the development of pedagogical research skills amongst AEP colleagues and honorary / affiliated staff, acting as a focus for pedagogical development. 
  • To oversee a culture which embraces and perpetuates innovation and supports the development of new research-informed ideas in education. 
  • To work with colleagues in similar roles across the university to deliver integrated activities that encourage research-informed and research-led approaches to education. 
  • To contribute to educational delivery as per expertise. 

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.  

Skills, knowledge, and experience  

  • Leadership in education innovation and pedagogical research 
  • Experience of UG or PG education delivery 

Essential criteria

  • First Degree or Masters in relevant subject; 
  • PhD or in Biomedical Science, Education or a related subject (eg. clinical qualification); 
  • FHEA or equivalent educational qualification 
  • Experience of pedagogical research including contributions to national/international conferences publications  
  • Highly effective oral and written communication skills, to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information, alongside good organisational and administrative skills; 
  • Evidence of ability to develop education research skills and innovation programmes in others; 
  • Evidence of academic leadership. Proactive in creating and developing interactions and collaborations with colleagues with an ability to lead and function within a team and to plan and prioritise workload; 
  • Knowledge and understanding of educational programmes, their design and delivery, across the Life Sciences and Medicine fields; 

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of securing funding for pedagogical research 
  • Knowledge or experience in generative AI in a higher education setting
