Job Summary

The University of Birmingham is inviting applications for the post of NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer. Candidates from either Renal Medicine or Rheumatology or Paediatrics will compete for one post in their chosen speciality, which can be in any of the above three areas.

An NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer (https://www.nihr.ac.uk/documents/nihr-clinical-lectureships-medical-guidance-for-recruitment-and-appointment-2023/32783 (ACL)) post offers doctors in specialty training a combination of 50% of their time in clinical specialty training (clinical service provision for GPs) and 50% in academic training. It provides a maximum of 4 years’ funding or runs until the trainee achieves their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), whichever is soonest.

The ACL post provides opportunities for post-doctoral research and facilitates applications for further research funding for doctors working towards completion of their specialty training. It is intended for those who can demonstrate outstanding potential through success at doctoral research, and who show further potential for development as a clinical academic in research and/or educational research.

To apply for this NIHR 2023 ACL post, candidates should have submitted their final Doctoral thesis, and they must have been fully awarded their higher degree in order to be able to take up the post. The deadline to take up this post is 1st September 2024.

Person Specification

  • Must hold a higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent) in relevant subject area.
  • Evidence of good progress in clinical training to date, and that specialty training will be completed satisfactorily either during or after the 4-year period of the CL award.
  • Candidate must be at ST3 or above.
