The School of Mathematical Sciences at Lancaster University is seeking to appoint 2 Senior Lecturer and 2 Lecturer positions in applied mathematics, mathematical computer science, and AI methodology under a new £15M investment in “MARS: Mathematics for AI in Real-world Systems”.  These posts will form an inaugural cadre of high-quality researchers conducting research and teaching at the interface of mathematical modelling and AI, seeking to solve real-world problems through a mathematical AI lens.

MARS seeks to expand on our excellence in impactful and industrially engaged research in the School of Mathematical Sciences. Bringing in 10FTE new academic posts, with associated research staff and PhD students, MARS will revolutionise Lancaster’s research capacity in mathematics connecting systems modeling and AI methods, supporting flagship strategies in Manufacturing, Environmental Science, Health, and Cybersecurity. New undergraduate and postgraduate programmes will accompany this, providing opportunities to address a major skills-gap in mathematical modelling and AI methodology with application to real-world systems.  These activities will reach out to industry and government partners as regional, national, and global leaders in next-generation mathematics. With E3 funding, MARS will become a unique national capability in the North West, pushing the boundaries of AI-driven modelling to tackle key challenges in the modern world.

Successful candidates will have, or show clear evidence of developing, a strong track record of excellence in research, teaching and external engagement within a field related to mathematical modelling and/or AI methodology, with an enthusiastic approach to developing scholarship within MARS and the wider School of Mathematical Sciences. Candidates will be able to demonstrate a compelling vision for the future of mathematical AI, with promise for publishing in internationally leading Mathematical Sciences literature, and creative ideas for obtaining external research funding. They will show evidence of a commitment to translating foundational mathematical discoveries into real-world solutions through partnerships outside the academic sector, and have a desire to foster the next generation of mathematicians within an outward-facing talent pipeline. Strong applicants will be expected to have an application focus in areas including (though not limited to): epidemic modelling; systems modelling in biological, environmental, and ecological systems; areas of manufacturing and materials engineering; and cybersecurity applications.

The School aims to meet the needs of each staff member within an inclusive environment: new members are provided with mentoring and support from a carefully selected group of colleagues, with a lead individual taking responsibility for personal development. We have held Athena Swan Bronze awards at University (2008) and School (2017) level, and we are a registered supporter of the London Mathematical Society’s Good Practice Scheme.

Informal enquiries should be made to the Head of MARS, Professor Chris Jewell c.jewell@lancaster.ac.uk, or the Director of Research, Professor Rebecca Killick r.killick@lancaster.ac.uk.
