The ISIS Experimental Operations Division is seeking a Group Leader for the Sample Environment (SE) Group. The SE Group provides technical user support for all our neutron and muon instruments and is key in delivering many of the experiments carried out at ISIS. The Group consists of four teams delivering experimental support in the areas of Cryogenics, Ultra Low Temperature and High Magnetic fields, High Pressure and High Temperature, and Soft Matter.  As well as providing direct user support for experiments on our neutron and muon instruments, the Group provide an integral role in delivering bespoke equipment designed and produced by our in-house teams of engineers and technicians. The Group also provide an essential service in the delivery of the ISIS helium recovery facility for the ISIS department as well as others on the RAL campus.  

About you

You will offer a technical background in Sample Environment techniques, or equivalent work in High/Low temperature, High Magnetic fields, High Pressure or Soft Condensed Matter Research.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership, supervision, and people management to a multidisciplinary team of technicians and science support staff. 
  • Ensure the Group stays up to date with industry trends and best practices and to apply this knowledge to drive innovation and growth following the guidance set out in the ISIS Project Management Framework.
  • Showcase the work of the Group at conferences and workshops both within the UK and internationally and encourage such activity from all members of the Group.
  • Provide leadership and guidance on all health and safety matters within the workplace. 


Person Specification:

  • Qualified to degree level, or equivalent, in Physical Sciences or have significant experience in related work
  • Demonstrate a high level of leadership and management experience of a technical team where they have shown the ability to develop and implement strategic plans.
  • Demonstrate strong problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Be able to clearly describe their contributions to science related projects that showcase their technical background and achievements.
