The Department of Theology and Religion at Durham University seeks to appoint a talented individual to the role of Assistant Professor in Contemporary Islam. We welcome applications from those with research and teaching interests in the broad field of the social scientific study of contemporary Islam – whether rooted in sociology, anthropology or religious studies – and focused on expressions of Islam in any of its geographical and cultural contexts. The successful candidate will work alongside Prof Douglas Davies, Prof Mathew Guest, Prof Jonathan Miles-Watson and Dr Sitna Quiroz in developing research and teaching in the study of religion area, while also benefiting from the experience of working within a large and vibrant department of Theology and Religion, comprising a range of subject areas. The successful applicant would be expected to be in post by the beginning of the 2024-25 academic year. The post is full-time and permanent, and includes r esponsibilities spanning research, teaching (at undergraduate and postgraduate level), and citizenship.

Durham’s department of Theology and Religion has a long history, which goes back to foundation of the University in 1832. Its distinguished tradition of Christian theology and Biblical studies has, in recent years, been enhanced further by the social scientific study of religion, and Durham now boasts the largest concentration of scholars in this subfield for any university in the country. Theology and Religion at Durham is one of the very best UK departments in this field, with an outstanding reputation for excellence in teaching, research and employability of our students. It continues to attract high numbers of undergraduates and postgraduates each year to its programmes. The department is held in high esteem across the globe, as reflected in the QS World Reputation rankings, which in 2023 placed Durham’s department as 6th worldwide. In the UK’s Research Excellence Framework 2021, the department was ranked 4th for research power in the theology and religious studies subject area. In January 2024, in recognition of its commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion the department was awarded the Athena Swan Silver Award by Advance HE.
