The role

The Open University is recruiting a Copywriter – Fundraising and Engagement.

This role is based in The Open University Development Office, which plays a key part in bringing the OU’s social justice mission to life through ongoing philanthropy, partnerships, fundraising campaigns and alumni engagement. The Development Office secures philanthropic giving which enables the OU to continue reaching and supporting even more students and funding projects and programmes. The Development Office is also the home of the Alumni Association and works to create an engaged and connected global alumni and Honorary Graduate community.

The role holder will be responsible for creating powerful, high impact copy and content to support and drive the work of the Development Office teams. Their writing will be engaging and relevant to a wide range of target audiences, from the creation of individual bespoke pieces to mass approach alumni engagement and fundraising.

Skills and experience

  • A degree (equivalent qualification) or proven track record of extensive experience working in a professional fundraising, communications or marketing department.
  • Must demonstrate exemplary copywriting skills with proven experience of developing content across a range of communications channels. Ideally with a fundraising focus.
  • Experience of writing for multiple audiences and ability to understand the different motivations and barriers for each segment, adapting communications and tone of voice as needed.
  • Evidence of the ability to work quickly and accurately, with attention to detail and strong proof-reading skills, to tight deadlines producing written material which requires minimal input from senior colleagues.
  • Ability to understand and interpret complex concepts and translate into compelling and powerful propositions and articles.
  • Ability to work flexibly, using initiative and judgement to establish and progress prospects, programmes and projects.
  • High level of I.T. skills and the ability to quickly learn new programs – in relation to managing complex documents which includes using Microsoft Office Word and PowerPoint software.
