PhD Studentship: A study of Sensing and Wireless Communications

The University of Edinburgh - School of Engineering

Qualification Type: PhD
Location: Edinburgh
Funding for: UK Students, EU Students, International Students
Funding amount: Tuition fees + stipend are available for Home/EU and International students
Hours: Full Time
Placed On: 10th April 2024
Closes: 31st July 2024

This project is to investigate novel techniques for sensing and achieving efficient wireless communication. To fulfil the needs of future communication networks, the study will explore both the optical and radio frequencies for simultaneous sensing and wireless communications. The promise of these techniques is to use a single system for transmitting data, identifying nearby objects of interest (similar to radar) and obtaining location information from sensor data, etc. One of the approaches of interest is the electromagnetically induced transparency with Rydberg atoms.

The ideal candidate for this project would have first degree and MSc/MEng in physics, electronic and electrical engineering or a related discipline. A passion for experimental work and capability to develop/apply mathematical modelling techniques will be particularly important for this project.

It is a requirement of this PhD project to submit and have approved a researcher form with the project funder in advance of starting the post. Passport holders from the following countries may find it more difficult to get approval: Belarus, Iran, North Korea, People’s Republic of China and Russia.

Expected start date: October 2024 or shortly thereafter.
