Department
The University of York’s Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories (WACL) wish to recruit a Research Associate to analyse measurements of iodine in polar and temperate environments and to lead data analyses and publication of these data sets. This post is primarily to analyse previous measurements of iodide and iodate in snow made during the MOSAiC (Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate) icebreaker expedition in order to evaluate their potential to contribute to reactive iodine in the Arctic atmosphere. The post is available from 1 June 2024 for a period of up to 16 months.
WACL is the largest dedicated atmospheric chemistry facility in the UK, home to more than 70 researchers. WACL supports an exceptional research environment, providing access to state-of-the-art facilities and a wide range of interdisciplinary expertise. The Department of Chemistry, within which WACL sits, is proud of its Athena SWAN Gold Award and strives to provide a working environment which allows all staff and students to contribute fully, to flourish, and to excel.
Role
You will investigate the potential for iodine in snow to be released to the atmosphere via different mechanisms, to be investigated in the laboratory. Also, you will investigate the open-ocean sources of iodine by co-ordinating kinetic flow tube studies experiments studying the ozone-ocean-iodine system. Working with modellers to interpret the data from the MOSAiC project and other relevant data sets, and with the wider project team including postdoctoral research associates and PhD students.
