The School of Engineering Computing and Mathematics (SECAM) wish to appoint a Senior Technician (Physical Modelling) to provide research support in the University of Plymouth’s flagship Coastal, Ocean and Sediment Transport (COAST) laboratory. The COAST laboratory provides physical model testing with combined waves, currents and wind, offered at scales appropriate for device testing, array testing, environmental modelling and coastal engineering. 

You will work as part of a team under the direction of the School Technical Manager to: 

  • Manage and maintain designated equipment, facilities and infrastructure within the COAST laboratory.
  • Lead the design, development, implementation and data collection of physical modelling experiments for research and commercial projects
  • Provide general and specialist support for project work on taught courses and research projects providing constructive advice as necessary
  • Demonstrate, and train others in the use of the COAST laboratory facilities and equipment. 

You will need to demonstrate the relevant skills, a suitable amount of work experience and a commitment to technical delivery.  You will be expected to have a HND or Degree in a relevant subject area or equivalent or substantial experience in the subject. 

You must have practical knowledge and experience in: 

  • Demonstrable relevant practical skills
  • A knowledge of engineering principles
  • Ability to prioritise and complete work to deadlines 

Desirable experience includes: 

  • Working in a laboratory or practical based area
  • A knowledge of mechanical systems or fluid dynamics 

You must be proactive, safety conscious, and have the capability to approach activities in a professional manner. 

SECAM is the home of our Mechanical, Marine, Electrical, Electronic, and Robotics Engineering subject disciplines, which together with Civil and Coastal Engineering, Navigation, Computing and Mathematical Sciences, provides a vibrant inter-disciplinary and collaborative environment, dedicated towards producing pioneering research but also graduates, with the necessary applied knowledge and skills to meet the demands of employers today and tomorrow.

This is a full-time position working 37 hours per week and is fixed-term to cover a period of maternity leave which is anticipated to be for approximately 12 months.
