The Children and Young People’s Centre for Justice (CYCJ) is seeking a Research Assistant to provide support and work alongside our Research Team on a range of research, evaluation, and data projects in relation to children and young people in conflict with the law.

FTE: 1.0 (35 hours /week)

Term: Fixed Term (12 months)

The Children and Young People’s Centre for Justice (CYCJ) works towards ensuring that Scotland’s approach to children and young people in conflict with the law is rights-respecting; contributing to better outcomes for our children, young people and communities. We produce robust ground-breaking work by bringing together children and young people’s contributions, research evidence, practice wisdom and system know-how to operate as a leader for child and youth justice thinking in Scotland and beyond.  CYCJ is primarily funded by the Scottish Government and is hosted by the University of Strathclyde, in the School of Social Work and Social Policy.  We work across three workstreams: Practice and Policy Development, Research, and Participation and Engagement.

We are seeking a Research Assistant to provide support and work alongside our Research Team on a range of research, evaluation, and data projects in relation to children and young people in conflict with the law. You will respond to data and information requests, conduct literature reviews, collect, and collate data, and provide research and data support to the CYCJ team. You will manage and prioritise your own workload and ensure that all activities are completed to deadlines, and you will write up the results of your own research and contribute to the production of research reports and publications.

You will be a graduate in the social sciences with good written and oral communication skills and experience in a range of social research methods and analysis. You will have knowledge of appropriate research methods, have an ability to plan and prioritise your own workload, with general supervision, and you will have an ability to work within a team environment. You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen, engage and persuade, and to present complex information in an accessible way to a range of audiences. You should understand the practical and ethical issues involved in conducting research with children and young people. Research experience beyond your university studies is desirable. Knowledge and understanding of CYCJ and the context of youth justice in Scotland is desirable.

Please note that this post is fixed term for 12 months in the first instance, to provide additional capacity on a number of fixed term projects, but may be extended depending upon funding.
