Are you looking for an ambitious, exciting, supportive and inclusive fashion school community within which to further develop your research and teaching?

Based in one of the UK's largest fashion hubs, in the heart of a great global city, Manchester Metropolitan University's Fashion Institute (MFI) is uniquely positioned as one the UKs largest specialist fashion Higher Education providers.

About the role:
As part of the University's significant investment in the delivery of the Manchester Fashion Institute's new and ambitious strategic vision, we are looking for a Reader in Fashion Business to join our dynamic and growing team. We have an excellent track record in industry collaboration, academic research and innovative teaching and learning and have ambitious research plans following the most recent REF submission where art and design research at Manchester Metropolitan University was ranked 2nd in the UK for overall research power.

We are looking for an experienced academic to join our research community of cultural historians, designers, technologists, and social scientists, and aims to advance critical fashion thinking and practice around cutting-edge topics such as ethics, diversity, sustainability, digital innovation, supply chains, and consumption, with a focus on fashion as a force for good in society at large. We want to increase our focus on funded research and publication of high-quality outputs.

We have ambitious plans to grow our postgraduate provision, notably postgraduate research and those appointed could play a key part in supervision of PhD students. We want to further improve our graduate outcomes and reduce our award gaps. If any of these are areas that you believe you can contribute too, we would love to hear from you.

You will be expected to contribute to the design and delivery of high-quality teaching and assessment at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Your research and pedagogy will combine the elements of traditional marketing practices with a deep understanding of the fashion industry's unique dynamics and challenges. We wish to recruit to the following areas but not limited to: marketing and branding, management, retailing, merchandising and product development, economics and markets, entrepreneurship, forecasting and trend analysis, sustainability and the circular economy, technology and innovation, supply chain from production to distribution, sourcing and ethics.

It should be noted that experience does not have to specifically be from fashion background, although we would seek assurance through the application process that you could apply your broader marketing expertise in a fashion context.

About you:
Essential Skills:

  • A good first degree together with a PhD in a relevant discipline or equivalent qualifications.
  • A PGCE, Certificate of Education or PGCLTHE (or equivalent).
  • Senior Fellowship of the HEA (or commitment to obtain within three years of initial appointment).
  • Commitment to the University's strategic objectives, with a focus on supporting Education, Research and Knowledge Exchange.
  • Commitment to the University's policies and procedures including promoting equality in own area of responsibility and in general conduct.
  • Membership of relevant Professional bodies, demonstrating professional standing.
  • Successfully publish research outputs suitable for REF inclusion, in peer reviewed journals or monographs, or publish/exhibit professional practice.

To apply, please submit a 300 words (maximum) statement telling us why you are interested in the post, an up-to-date CV and your two best research publications through our recruitment portal. For informal enquiries, please contact Prof. Gianpaolo Vignali g.vignali@mmu.ac.uk.
