About the role

UCL Press was launched in 2015 as the UK’s first fully open access university press. In that time, it has published over 300 books and has built a portfolio of 15 journals, which have achieved over 8 million downloads globally. UCL Press now publishes around 60 books a year and a number of those will be assigned to the Production Editor to oversee.

Hybrid Working:

This role is eligible for hybrid working with a minimum of 10% on site.

The purpose of the job is to manage a list of books and journals from handover of manuscript to publication, overseeing all stages of production from submission to final files. The Production Editor will manage a range of stakeholders and suppliers and will be responsible for commissioning and evaluating freelance and supplier work. The Production Editor has responsibility for budgeting, scheduling and quality control for assigned titles, and the role also provides general support to the Production Manager.

About you

We are looking for candidates who in particular have the following experience and skills:

  • Scholarly book publishing experience
  • Experience of managing books through the production process, from manuscript submission to final files, with full responsibility for own titles / list (including managing budget, quality and schedule) and direct author liaison
  • Experience of journal production and workflows from approved manuscript to final files
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with ability to handle negotiation effectively and tactfully with all project stakeholders
  • Experience of managing a pool of freelance suppliers and undertaking regular quality control checks, giving feedback and testing new suppliers
  • Strong copy-editing and proofreading skills
