An exciting opportunity has arisen within the School of Physics and Astronomy to join the award-winning Physics Mentoring Project team.

Physics Mentoring is a project with inclusivity at its core. We believe that Physics is relevant to all lives and experiences and should be available to all who wish to engage with it, regardless of background, protected characteristics, or academic ability. We also believe that Physics is key to unlocking transferrable skills, such as problem-solving, critical reasoning and numeracy, which can increase a person’s enjoyment, safety and belonging in society and increase economic benefit. Physics skills can lead to an immeasurable number of careers and jobs, in a wide variety of fields. This ethos informs the project’s methodology and outputs.

The post-holder will be part of the team delivering the various aspects of the Physics Mentoring Project, with GCSE students, A-level students and events promoting alternative routes. The role focuses particularly in relation to product communication, including social media to support the core functions of the project, and assisting the Project Officer to co-ordinate and deliver high quality events.

This is a varied and exciting role, suited to someone who enjoys taking the initiative, being creative and passionate about increasing diversity in physics. It will include supporting activities such as recruitment of mentors and schools, assisting the co-ordination and delivery of mentor training and events.

The project has been funded by Welsh Government since 2021 plus contributions from university partners and Levelling Up: STEM. Other key contacts to the project include representatives from HEFCW, Universities Wales, educational consortia, Careers Wales and the Institute of Physics.

This post is part time (21 hours per week), available immediately and is fixed term until 31 October 2024. Flexible working arrangements, including job shares and compressed hours, will be considered if requested by the successful applicant. The role will require some travel. Some evening and weekend working maybe required for occasional events, but time off in lieu will be granted.
