The College wishes to appoint a 4-hour Stipendiary Lecturer in French for the academic year 2024-25, to provide teaching in core areas of the French curriculum from 1st September 2024. To find out more about the College, please see our website www.lmh.ox.ac.uk.
Background and Duties
Lady Margaret Hall has three Fellows in Modern Languages: Prof. Killeen, Dr Hanne Eckhoff (Tutor in Russian and Linguistics) and Dr Hannie Lawlor (Tutor in Spanish). Also associated with the College are Dr Chimène Bateman (Medieval and Early Modern French); Prof. Ben Morgan (German Tutor, Fellow at Worcester College) and Prof. Francesca Southerden (the Italian Fellow at Somerville College). French language teaching is covered by Ms Ysaline Rossi, Ms Marie Léger and Dr Alice Violet.
The Lecturer will work under the direction of Dr Chimène Bateman and the Senior Tutor.
There is an average intake of 6-7 students reading French at Lady Margaret Hall per year.
In addition to teaching, the Lecturer will be expected to help with related administrative duties and pastoral duties. This will include serving as Personal Tutor to undergraduates, helping to organise their tuition, to monitor their progress and to provide general pastoral support. The post will also involve the setting and marking of collections (termly college examinations) and completing tutorial reports on the Tutorial Management System (TMS).
The Lecturer will also take part in the annual undergraduate admissions exercise in December, which includes reading submitted schoolwork and shortlisting applicants. Training in admissions interviewing is required, and will be provided, if the Lecturer has not already undertaken the training. The Lecturer will be encouraged to participate in recruitment and access initiatives relating to Modern Languages, (e.g. open days and taster days in the College) and in social events with students which are funded by the College. It is hoped that the Lecturer will become an active member of the College community and participate in the life of the College. The appointment carries with it membership of the College’s Education Committee, which meets once a term.
