Researcher in Chalcogenide Glass, Preform, and Optical Fiber Fabrication

Technical University of Denmark - DTU Electro

Location: Lyngby - Denmark
Salary: Based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent, Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 29th April 2024
Closes: 13th May 2024

If you aim at scientific excellence and want to establish a career as a scientist within the fabrication of chalcogenide fibers for high-level applications within mid-IR supercontinuum sources for imaging and spectroscopy and within mid-IR biosensing using Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR), then we have the ideal opportunity for you. Come and be a part of the “Table-Top Synchrotron” project and one of the world’s strongest groups in this field in our quest to develop and apply supercontinuum sources that outcompete synchrotrons from the deep-UV down to 33 nm to the mid-IR up to 15 µm.

To cover this enormous bandwidth we will be making 4 supercontinuum sources, or beam lines, based on gas-filled hollow-core fibers, silica and soft-glass fibers, such as fluoride and chalcogenide fibers. The chalcogenide fibers enabling the generation of the ultra-long wavelengths we will make in-house and this will be your task. State-of-the-art chalcogenide glass chemistry, extruder, and draw tower labs will be available for the task, all in a clean room zone.

For development the Fiber Sensors & Supercontinuum Group at Department of Electrical and Photonics Engineering (DTU Electro) at the Technical University of Denmark, is seeking a candidate for a Tenure Track Researcher position in chalcogenide glass, preform, and optical fiber fabrication. Special emphasis will be on fabrication of sulfide and selenide step-index fibers with high Numerical Aperture (NA) and the use of co-extrusion to make preforms.

Responsibilities

Your main tasks and responsibilities will be:

  • Fabrication of sulfide, selenide, and tellurium glasses from raw elements, including purification with distillation.
  • Co-extrusion of sulfide, selenide, and tellurium step-index optical fiber preforms.
  • Drawing of large core and small core sulfide, selenide, and tellurium step-index optical fibers. Characterization of fiber dispersion and loss.

You must contribute to the teaching of courses. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

Qualifications

A PhD Degree in chalcogenide optical fiber fabrication and documented experience in fabricating selenide and/or sulfide glasses, preforms, and optical fibers.

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The position is part of DTU’s Tenure Track program. Read more about the program and the recruitment process here
