University of Bristol - Cellular and Molecular Medicine

Location: Bristol
Salary: £37,099 to £41,732 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 2nd May 2024
Closes: 29th May 2024
Job Ref: ACAD107525

The role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced postdoctoral immunologist to join the Bristol Vaccine Centre (BVC) to work as part of a collaborative research programme studying mucosal immunity to Streptococcus pyogenes, also known as Group A streptococcus (GAS). You will work under supervision and mentorship of experienced investigators (Dr Anu Goenka, Dr Alice Halliday and Professor Adam Finn) in the BVC Immunology Laboratory Group with other trainees and experienced technical staff. The post is based at the School of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, University of Bristol.

The overarching aim of our group’s research programme is to develop a deeper understanding of the immunology of infection, to inform the development and use of vaccines, with a particular focus on respiratory mucosal immunity. We employ an array of immunological laboratory methodologies mostly using human samples such as blood, saliva and tonsils. Our research group encourages a culture of scientific curiosity and learning, with regular meetings to present and discuss data.

What will you be doing?

You will work on a project to investigate T cell responses to GAS by performing in vitro stimulation experiments with tonsil mononuclear cells (TMNC), and matched peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from children and adults in order to better understand how age protects us from infection with this pathogen. The project forms part of a newly launched iSpy Network (Immunity to Streptococcus pyogenes) supported by the Leducq foundation. This network brings together 28 investigators across 11 countries, including experts in immunology, infectious disease, epidemiology, vaccinology and experimental medicine.

You should apply if

You have a PhD (awarded or imminent) in immunology or a related field, and experience with relevant techniques such as: cell culture flow cytometry, ELISpot, T cell assay development and working with human samples.

Additional information

For informal enquiries please contact Dr Anu Goenka (anu.goenka@bristol.ac.uk).

It is anticipated that interviews will take place on 15th July 2024.
