The Head of Academic English Skills provides leadership for the academic team and contributes to the delivery of excellent student outcomes; quality assurance and enhancement and curriculum innovation which embeds strong collaborative working with both the University and the network. 

Reporting to the Deputy Centre Director, you will work closely with senior colleagues within and outside of the Centre and be responsible for the delivery of progression targets set. The post-holder will take responsibility for both Foundation and Pre-masters pathways and manage the delivery of modules, whilst leading teaching, learning and assessment initiatives in the Centre to embed good practice in language development and academic skills within both AES and subject module delivery.

The successful candidate will have recent successful line management experience in an academic setting within a relevant subject discipline and have a proven ability to engage with a HEI in collaborative developments.

ABOUT THE ROLE

  • Communicate and drive the vision for continuous improvement and achieving student outcome targets.
  • Foster academic partnership with the host university and develop effective teaching and learning provisions.
  • Develop programme pathways aligned with the centre's strategic aims for UK Higher Education.
  • Contribute to planning and development across various areas within the Academic Management Team.
  • Coordinate academic staff resources efficiently across academic and progression support teams.
  • Ensure timely and compliant recruitment of academic staff.
  • Provide oversight and feedback on Academic English Skills team performance.
  • Participate in meetings, events, and represent the Centre internally and externally.
  • Ensure academic standards and learning opportunities meet quality expectations.
  • Oversee Academic English Skills and programme review processes.
  • Ensure compliance with quality frameworks, policies, and procedures.
  • Analyse data and feedback to monitor progress and implement necessary actions.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team to deliver effective timetables and assessments.
  • Integrate subject, academic skills, and language development into the programme.
  • Build relationships within the organisation, with university partners, offices, agents, and sponsors.

ABOUT YOU

  • A bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline is essential, a Master’s or higher degree is desirable.
  • Relevant Teaching qualification (DELTA, TEFL, MA Linguistics etc.) (Essential)
  • Experience in providing leadership in a complex multi-disciplinary environment, with evidence of success (Essential)
  • Experience teaching English to international students in UK Higher or Further Education (Essential)
  • Experience working across, up and down an organisation as well as with external partners and both national and international stakeholders (Essential)
  • Significant teaching experience within post-16 education, a UK pathway Centre or higher education (Essential)
