The role

The Trust wishes to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced manager to take on the responsibility of managing the day-to-day operations of the Trust. 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To prepare the Annual Operational Plan and Budget for consideration of and approval by the Board.
  • To ensure the objectives and targets within the approved Annual Operational Plan and Budget are achieved.
  • To resolve problems arising from the Trust’s activities.
  • To inform the Board immediately of any matter the resolution of which would fall outside the Director’s authority and any other matter deemed to be necessary to bring to the attention of the Board.
  • To maintain good working relationships with The Chair, The Treasurer and The Secretary.
  • To manage the relationship between the stakeholders within UKMT which include UKMT staff, Volunteers, Members and Trustees and with the external partners including sponsors.
  • To work with academic mathematicians, teachers and young people interested in mathematics.
  • To ensure that there is an appropriate organisational and management structure supporting the Trust’s operations which is fit for purpose and adequately staffed with the appropriate spread of skills and experience.
  • To ensure that there are adequate operational and financial controls to minimise the occurrence of any event which would have a significant adverse impact on the Trust.
  • To monitor the operation of the control system and take prompt action if major weaknesses are identified.
  • To ensure compliance with all Board Policies and to inform the Board of any significant breaches of compliance.
  • To ensure that operations are ethical and in accordance with the Trust’s Strategic Plan.
  • To prepare a regular Management Report to the Board as required by the Board.
  • To support the Trust with its relationship with donors and sponsors. 

Person Specification

The successful candidate will be an experienced manager, with a wide range of skills, who will be able to provide leadership across the full range of activities and have the ability to operate with confidence and agility in a setting involving a range of stakeholders.

Essential Knowledge / Experience

  • You should be educated to degree level or have equivalent or relevant experience.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the regulatory context of a charity working with young people, including an overview of the main principles and regulatory requirements in the areas of: companies, charities, health and safety, child safeguarding.
  • Proven experience of effectively leading teams including through challenging times, facilitating cross-team and cross-stakeholder collaborations and working with stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience of preparing and presenting management information and other reports to a board of directors.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the principles of financial control
  • Strong line management and people management skills, with proven coaching skills. Ability to oversee working of teams in a hybrid working environment.
  • Ability to handle a diverse and varied workload, with the capability to manage both projects and operational tasks concurrently.

Desirable Knowledge/Experience

  • STEM experience, especially in mathematics and knowledge of the under 18 education environment.
  • Experience of bookkeeping software such as Xero, QuickBooks, Sage and similar.
