The Department of Physics seeks to appoint a motivated and driven Research Fellow within the Astronomy and Astrophysics Group, to commence as soon as possible (start date negotiable), for a duration of 3 years. Applications for a part-time position will be considered. 

The successful candidate will work with Dr Heather M. Cegla on the “Pathway to the Confirmation and Characterisation of Habitable Alien Worlds,” funded by the UK Research and Innovation Future Leaders Fellowship programme.

They will utilise state-of-the-art 3D magnetohydrodynamical simulations and perform spectral line synthesis to create realistic stellar surface simulations.

The aim is to further our understanding of Sun-like stars and improve the radial velocity detection and mass confirmation of low-mass, long period planets. Duties will also include analysing and presenting results in peer-reviewed publications and at national and international conferences.

About You

Applicants must hold or be about to attain a PhD in a related field. Applications should demonstrate a proven research track record. Strong written and oral communications skills will be essential for dissemination of results and outreach projects. Backgrounds in solar or stellar physics are preferred, especially in the areas of stellar modelling or line synthesis; areas outside these are encouraged if they complement the project. Experience with exoplanet science is desirable.

If you are near submission or have recently submitted your PhD but have not yet had it conferred, any offers of employment will be made as Research Assistant at the top of level 5 of the University grade structure. Upon receipt of evidence of the successful award of your PhD, you will be promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of level 6 of the University grade structure
