We are looking to appoint a Research Fellow to support an innovative project funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research which explores safe housing for people experiencing domestic abuse, living with a disability and/or long-term condition and/or life-limiting illness. The position is for up to 12 months to cover a period of maternity leave.

The study aims to explore current housing provision for adult victim-survivors of domestic abuse  with physical disabilities and long-term/life-limiting illness and how local authorities, who support the provision of safe accommodation, are meeting their needs under the Domestic Abuse Act (2021).  Working with people with lived experience, local authorities, and domestic abuse organisations .

Working in partnership with stakeholders findings will be used to co-produce a toolkit for local authorities and  their partners with recommendations and models for best practice to meet the needs of victim-survivors living with a disability/long-term/life-limiting illness.

The main responsibilities of the post holder will be supporting the delivery of the first phase of the study under the supervision of the lead, Dr Michelle Myall. Responsibilities include:

  • project coordination and reporting
  • maintaining high quality research procedures
  • developing the study protocol and supporting ethics and research governance applications,
  • carrying out literature reviewing using scoping review methodology
  • survey and qualitative data collection and analysis
  • collaborating with professionals and communities
  • contributing to writing up findings and dissemination activities.

Building and maintaining relationships with a range of stakeholders, including people with lived experience of domestic abuse and physical disability and/or long term/life-limiting illness will form a significant part of the role and applicants should be able to demonstrate an understanding of undertaking research on projects involving diverse groups on sensitive topics.

The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in health services and/or social care research or social sciences. They will need to demonstrate:

  • experience of designing and delivering mixed-methods research, including survey design and qualitative interviews
  • high level ability to collaborate and communicate with diverse stakeholders, including public health and adult social care professionals, voluntary, community and social enterprise groups, and people who are experts by experience and seldom heard
  • high level ability to organise own workload, plan research activities to a high standard and to deadlines
  • demonstrative experience of co-design/production approaches and substantive experience of user involvement

Knowledge and understanding of domestic abuse and/or life-limiting illness and/or research on sensitive topics would be an advantage.

The post is based at Highfield Campus but remote and flexible working will be considered. The University of Southampton offers a competitive salary, pension scheme and other benefits.
