We are excited to announce a unique opportunity for a Lab Technician to join our team at the ToddlerLab CAVE, at Birkbeck, University of London. You'll provide a high-quality technical service to proactively support the research team across the lab within the Centre for Brain and Cognitive Development (CBCD).

This 9-month, maternity cover, role is ideal for individuals with a background in game development or postdoctoral research, and a keen interest in virtual reality and remote recording technologies.

As a Lab Technician, you will:

  • Assist in the design, construction, and maintenance of a virtual CAVE environment integrated with cutting-edge technologies such as EEG, NIRS, motion capture, and eye-tracking equipment.
  • Develop content for the 3D CAVE environment that interfaces with remote sensing technologies.
  • Provide scientific programming support for other students and researchers at the CBCD.
  • Be responsible for the efficient day-to-day running of the CAVE facilities and equipment.
  • Provide training and coaching in the use of CAVE equipment and relevant software to support research and teaching.

The ideal Lab Technician candidate will have:

  • Experience with 3D graphics development, such as Unity or Unreal Engine.
  • Strong programming skills in C#, and familiarity with Matlab and Python.
  • Experience in running NIRS, eyetracking, and/or EEG studies.
  • Knowledge of basic Engineering, Neuroimaging, Cognitive Neuroscience, and Vision Sciences.

ToddlerLab is a dedicated 5-story research facility developed for studying toddler and preschool development, in naturalistic environments, within the Centre for Brain and Cognitive Development (CBCD) at Birkbeck, University of London. Toddlerlab CAVE is a virtual reality lab for young children, fitted with motion capture, head-mounded eye-tracking and wearable EEG and fNIRS that monitor brain and cognitive development across toddlerhood and beyond.

Remuneration

£21,182 rising to £24,212 per annum (pro rata 50% of £42,365-£48,424 FTE), Grade 5 on Birkbeck's London Pay Scale, and includes a consolidated London Weighting/Allowance to staff whose place of work is in London.
