The role

The School of Physics at the University of Bristol seeks an outstanding candidate for a permanent academic appointment within the field of nuclear materials. The appointment will be made on the Lecturer scale. The appointee will establish their own world-class independent research programme with the aim of strengthening our research activities in the Materials & Devices theme and the broader Energy materials strategy of the university.

Nuclear Science & Engineering is crucial to the University of Bristol’s global research pillar on tackling climate change, and is a key area of investment and success, especially within the School of Physics. This post aims to complement our current research strengths in experimental materials research, in either fission or fusion. We envisage that the appointee will make use of our world-class nuclear facilities within the Interface Analysis Centre (IAC), with the possibility of further development & funding to support these activities. Our nuclear research groups have excellent relationships with key industrial partners (such as EDF, NNL, Sellafield Ltd., AWE, Rolls Royce, UKAEA, for example) and the appointee will work with our engagement and industrial liaison team in the South-West Nuclear Hub to further enhance these interactions.

Applicants should have excellent scientific output evidenced by publications in high quality journals and, commensurate with their career stage, have either a track-record of attracting research funding or demonstrate a strong potential to do so in the future. The appointee will be involved in teaching on the Nuclear Science &  Engineering programme and will participate in the teaching of nuclear and materials-related units to students at UG and PGT level. The appointee may also contribute to teaching across the core undergraduate physics curriculum. The University seeks applicants with a strong commitment to all aspects of the academic mission, not only research & teaching, but also outreach & knowledge transfer activities, and academic leadership and administration.

What will you be doing?

The post-holder will be responsible for developing their own internationally leading, independent research programme & supervising postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate students. The post-holder with take on teaching duties, both undergraduate and postgraduate, within the School of Physics, as required. They will also take on take on appropriate administrative duties within the School of Physics & the University, as required.
