The Department of History is seeking to appoint a fixed term Research Associate in Creative Writing (Drama) to work on the AHRC-funded project, Creative Histories of Witchcraft: France, 1790-1940. This project brings together creative writers and historians to explore the role and value of creativity in historical research, focusing on the example of criminal trials involving witchcraft in France from the French Revolution to the Second World War.

As Research Associate you will work collaboratively with the Principle Investigator (PI) and another Research Associate in Creative Writing (Short-form or Poetry) to produce a portfolio of creative pieces exploring witchcraft in France during this period. This core team will meet weekly to do collaborative exercises. You will suggest pieces to read, read pieces suggested by the other members of the core team, produce a portfolio of creative pieces, co-author a critical introduction to the creative pieces, write posts for the project blog, and workshop writing from the other core project members. You will also present work in progress at public events.

We are looking for someone with experience of collaborative creative work. You will have a track record of delivering creative outputs. You should also have experience of communicating research findings to non-academic audiences. Critical recognition for creative work, French language skills, and experience of historical research are desirable, but not essential. We welcome applicants with either postgraduate qualifications in creative writing, a track-record of published creative work, or both.

Timescale of appointment:

Long-listed candidates will be notified on or around Friday 28 September 2018 and asked to submit up to 15 A4 pages of writing, whether an extract from a longer piece or a stand-alone piece, to be sent to as soon as possible after notification but no later than Wednesday 3 October 2018.

Short-listed candidates will be notified on or around Friday 12 October and invited to interview.

Anticipated interview date: Week of 22 October 2018

Start date: 1 January 2019

Closing date for applications is midnight Sunday 23 September 2018
