 Applications are invited for an appointment as Lecturer (Below the Bar) in Civil Engineering at NUI Galway. 

 The new appointee will be required to make significant contributions to the teaching and research programmes in Civil Engineering at NUI Galway. In terms of teaching, the appointee will be expected to contribute strongly to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes, student project supervision, and administration activities of the Discipline of Civil Engineering and the College. Primary teaching responsibilities will be in the area of structural engineering, particularly structural design.

 It is also anticipated that the appointee will develop an outstanding research programme in Civil Engineering specialising in structural engineering, working with colleagues across the University’s academic disciplines and research institutes. Candidates with research expertise in any branch of civil engineering structures are welcome including areas of strength at NUI Galway such as computational mechanics, advanced structural testing and civil engineering materials (concrete, steel and timber). The new appointee will be expected to attract R&D funding in fundamental and applied research areas, and to apply for major funding awards such as the SFI Investigators Programme and the European Research Council (ERC) Grant programmes.

 The successful candidate shall possess:

  • A primary degree in civil engineering or a closely related discipline;
  • Normally, a PhD in civil engineering or a closely related discipline;
  • Experience in third level teaching and the ability to deliver modules on structural design;
  • An appropriate publication record and research funding record;
  • An ability to conduct programme administration and management in a public service university environment;
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, and an ability and commitment to develop collaborative relationships with other academic staff in the pursuit of teaching and research objectives in civil engineering;
  • A strong commitment to working with colleagues within existing, established research centres and groups and a willingness to develop and lead new research activity and research groupings.
  • A strong commitment to working with the civil engineering (and closely related) industry.
  • A commitment to contribute directly to recently-established and new post-graduate taught programmes, including the development of new taught modules.
