Brunel Design is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow (Project Researcher) with experience in in research projects in the commercial and/or academic context to enhance the delivery of our exciting new research and innovation programme Impacting Business by Design (IBbD). The project aims to bring about lasting improvements to the productivity and competitiveness of businesses (SMEs and larger enterprises) across the UK by improving their ability to successfully develop and commercialise new products and services. The IBbD programme is funded with a £4.648 million grant by Research England, under Connecting Capability Fund (CCF).

The core team consists of three interconnected professional design studios at Brunel University London, De Montfort and Nottingham Trent, which will carry out a range of collaborative projects with qualifying businesses. The additional partners include the British Industrial Design Association (BIDA), the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association (CAIA) and the Manufacturers’ Organisation (EEF).

The appointee will support a core team of full-time design practitioners, academics and researchers to engage in collaborative design innovation projects with businesses of different types by providing research input to its activities, covering two key-areas:

  1. Human-centred design research - to feed into the collaborative design projects between the IBbD studio and businesses;
  2. Business intelligence research - to enable sourcing of the projects and measuring their impact short, mid and long-term.

Applicants must have a a further degree in a relevant subject area such as design, engineering or business/management (e.g. a PhD or MBA) or experience in a relevant field of research.

The appointee should have a proven track record (publications) in planning and managing quantitative and qualitative research projects methods and data analysis methods and ideally experience in contemporary professional design practice, new product development and innovative design approaches.

The Project Researcher will:

  • Instigate and manage the required research activity within the design studio at Brunel Design, the IBbD consortium and the business community;
  • Develop appropriate research instruments;
  • Organise and engage in research data collection and analysis;
  • Support the team in generating interest and participation in the IBbD programme through various marketing activities (e.g. PR);
  • Provide support in building and maintaining close working relationships with the colleges (particularly in the College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences), research institutes and the interdisciplinary research networks at Brunel University London to establish a network of individuals who can support the IBbD programme;
  • Work effectively with colleagues in the IBbD team and across other Brunel University stakeholders - Corporate Relations, RSDO, Innovation Hub, Alumni Office, Professional Development Centre, Vice Chancellor’s Office and other university services to ensure IBbD is delivered effectively;
  • Working closely with the IBbD team and collaborating businesses to provide all necessary reporting and content for marketing and project dissemination activities;
  • Take a significant part in the project administration activities; and
  • Support the Project Director in the promotion of IBbD
