Hours: Full Time

Applications are invited for a 3-year Clinical Research Fellowship (PhD/MD) starting in summer/autumn 2019 in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care, University of Cambridge. The Fellow will be supervised by Dr. Stephen Barclay in the Palliative and End-of-Life Care Group of the Primary Care Unit (PCU)  http://www.phpc.cam.ac.uk/pcu/research/research-groups/end-of-life-care/ and Dr Robbie Duschinsky https://www.phpc.cam.ac.uk/pcu/research/research-groups/applied-social-science-group/

The care of people towards living in care homes towards the end of their lives is an increasingly important area for clinical practise, research and policy: nationally 22% of deaths occur in care homes. The Fellowship is funded by St Luke’s Hospice in North West London (Medical Director Dr Charles Daniels) who have developed an innovative intervention with a doctor working in their community palliative care team to optimise End-of-Life Care for care home residents.  The Fellow will work clinically in care homes within the St Luke’s community palliative care team while undertaking the doctoral research.

The research will include: systematic literature review, analysis of data from the current service, participant observation of the intervention and investigation of the intervention’s impact in a case-control study.

Candidates will be medically qualified with General Medical Council licence to practice in the UK: the post is ideally for early stage clinicians who have completed their Foundation Years’ training and have clinical experience in Palliative Care, Geriatrics or General Practice. Clinical experience in care homes would be an advantage, but is not a requirement. Candidates must meet the University of Cambridge entrance requirements: see http://www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/entry-requirements.

The fellowship will pay the successful candidate’s clinical salary according to national salary scales with research costs and tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. The Fellow may undertake clinical work in addition, in accordance with university guidelines and after discussion with the supervisors.

The funds for this post are available for 3 years from commencement in post.
