About the team/job

We are looking to recruit an experienced Research Software Engineer to develop and deploy a cloud environment for bioimage informatics.

With new technological developments microscopy imaging routinely produces terabyte-sized data sets making cell biology at EMBL a data-intensive discipline. The Cell Biology and Biophysics Computational Support team helps scientists exploit complex quantitative data to make discoveries. In this context, we are looking to expand the team with a software engineer to build a computational environment enabling cloud-based data-driven biological research. This project will contribute to Euro-BioImaging and the EOSC-Life project.

Your role

The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing tools and workflows to manage and analyze image data in the cloud with the goal of providing a robust and user-friendly infrastructure for dealing with image data in a remote environment. The postholder will also be expected to reach out to relevant communities through the organisation and participation in community-oriented events such as workshops and hackathons. The role will involve interacting with partners in Euro-BioImaging (link) and the EOSC-Life project (link) and may require occasional travel. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to make an impact in the way data-driven biological research is conducted.

You have

  • Experience in programming, preferably in multiple languages
  • Experience running and developing software in a Linux environment
  • Experience with modern web development (HTML5, Javascript)
  • Experience with cloud technologies (e.g. OpenStack, Terraform, containers...)
  • Fluency in English
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and independently
  • Ability to learn new skills as required

You might also have

  • Familiar with the Galaxy platform and/or CWL
  • Familiarity with bioimaging and/or image analysis software

Why join us

You'll contribute to the digital biology revolution while being part of an international environment with a unique concentration of technical and scientific expertise.

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family friendly working environment. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits, as well as financial support for relocation and installation, including your family and the availability of an excellent child care facility on campus. EMBL has a large thriving community of bioinformaticians, working in close collaboration with experimental scientists and with strong links to other local scientists and institutions.
