Applicants are sought for a 21 month post-doctoral position to conduct ethnographic research on the social and organisational aspects of using advanced robotics and artificial intelligence in the nuclear industry. This post will be within the RAIN (Robotics and Artificial Intelligence for Nuclear) Hub, which is funded by the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, part of the government’s modern Industrial Strategy. The fund is delivered by UK Research and Innovation and managed by EPSRC.
The RAIN hub aims to develop new technologies for an industry that faces some of the most extreme environments in the world. Radiation levels and harsh conditions restrict human access to many facilities. As yet robotic systems have had little impact on the industry. The research fellowship has been created to explore the possibilities and limitations for the development and adoption of these technologies in the nuclear industry. The successful applicant will have unique access to the RAIN partners (academic and industry research leaders, developers and implementers of nuclear robotics technologies based in 7 UK universities and the UKAEA’s RACE centre).
The post will be held by the University of Manchester, but the post-holder can be based at any of the partner institutions if desired. Partner institutions are the Universities of Bristol, Lancaster, Liverpool, Nottingham, Oxford, and Sheffield. The successful applicant will also be affiliated to the BEAM nuclear and social research network under the direction of Professor Penny Harvey in the Department of Social Anthropology, Dr Damian O’Doherty in the Alliance Manchester Business School, and Professor Richard Taylor in the Dalton Nuclear Institute. Successful candidates will have a PhD in the social sciences based on ethnographic fieldwork with experience in the analysis of industrial science and technology and/or management and organization of technology innovation.
Applicants must provide a summary account of the research that they intend to conduct, and letter of support from their proposed host institution if not the University of Manchester. Candidates should note that they will be expected to travel across the RAIN network and to key national nuclear licence sites. We expect the post to be taken up on 1st April 2019 and to run for 21 months.
