About Us

The Science & Technology Facilities Council is a partner organisation within the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). UKRI is a new entity that brings together nine partners to create an independent organisation with a strong voice for research and innovation, and a vision to ensure the UK maintains its world-leading position in research and innovation.

STFC’s Central Laser Facility (CLF) provides scientists from the UK and Europe with an unparalleled range of state-of-the-art laser technology, used in areas ranging from fundamental physics to biomedical science.

About the Role

This is a “link scientist” role within the CLF’s Octopus facility, which develops and operates advanced optical microscopes for the academic and industrial user community. The facility offers state-of-the-art techniques including super-resolution methods, single-molecule localization and tracking, FLIM/PLIM, light-sheet microscopy, and optical trapping methods. Developments ongoing or planned include super-resolution microscopy under cryogenic conditions, 3D 4Pi microscopy, iPALM, and correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM). Octopus facility scientists are world leaders in the development of advanced optical microscopy instruments and methodologies and work closely with the user community to ensure the delivery of a high-quality collaborative science programme.

Main responsibilities are:

  1. Developing new microscopy techniques and instrumentation, particularly focused on 3D super-resolution microscopy, correlative methods, and complex workflows.
  2. Supporting facility users, particularly in use of advanced microscopy techniques and data acquisition. You will be supported by the Octopus team who provide assistance in other areas, e.g. sample preparation and data analysis.

The successful candidate will disseminate their work through journal publications and conference presentations.

There is a requirement for travel to conferences and meetings, including internationally.

About You

You will hold a PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline.

You will have significant experience in the development of advanced optical microscopy techniques and instrumentation, and a track record of experience with at least one of the microscopy techniques available, under development or planned in Octopus (e.g. STED or 4Pi microscopy).

It is desirable for you to have experience in one or more of the following:

  • Working in a team developing and delivering advanced microscopy/optical methods
  • Working in a multidisciplinary environment,
  • Microscopy data analysis
  • Correlative light and electron microscopy
