Xi'an Jiaotong - Liverpool University



Applications are invited for the position of Director of the Centre for Academic Affairs, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University [XJTLU]. The University has four administrative centres of which the Centre for Academic Affairs is the largest. The Director works closely with the Vice President Academic Affairs to ensure administrative support is provided to all academic departments and activities, and to the office of the Centre for Academic Affairs.

The successful applicant will have a record of leadership and management in university administration. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience of work in China. Candidates must have native-speaker competence in English and appropriate professional experience for their stage of career development, including particularly demonstrated team-building and inter-personnel skills.

Applicants are expected to be able to operate in English, the language of instruction at the university. The successful appointee will be expected to work closely with the Vice President Academic Affairs. Appointment is initially for three years, with one further appointment for three years possible.


XJTLU is a unique collaborative institution, the first Joint Venture University in China to offer both UK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited undergraduate degrees for all programmes. Formed in 2006, the first cohort of students graduated in August 2010. The University now has 13,000 students studying on its campus in the Suzhou Industrial Park [SIP]. A new campus is currently under development at Taicang, in the northeastern part of Suzhou City. XJTLU aims to become truly research-led, and has recently committed significant investment into research development and the expansion of PhD student numbers on campus.

The Centre for Academic Affairs has six constituent offices: The Registry, Programme Management and Quality Assurance (Education Office); Research Office; Graduate School; Academic Services Office (academic planning, staff management office, academic governance, committee support); Academic Management Office (provision of administrative services to academic departments, schools, and clusters).


Employment at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is regulated by Chinese Labour Laws, and must comply with the regulations of the provincial government. These regulations stipulate who is eligible for legal employment with regard to obtaining work permits and visas. Please be advised candidates over 55 may be not eligible for PRC work visa.

    4. Development of an institutional approach to external professional accreditation
    5. Organizes annual and otherwise regular academic reviews of degree programmes and academic units
    6. Chair, Organizing Committee Comprehensive Evaluation Admission Interviews
    7. Development and maintenance of effective student feedback systems
    8. Liaison with other parts of the university outside of CAA on matters of academic policy and practice
  5. Liaison with University of Liverpool (UoL)
    1. Direct contact with a range of UoL staff
    2. Provision of intelligence to XJTLU about UoL

Key relationships

Provision of support on academic affairs across the university, and in particular to:

  1. VP Academic Affairs, to optimise strategic and operational effectiveness of Centre for Academic Affairs
  2. VP Administrative Affairs, to avoid duplication of effort across centres, and with a particular focus on HR matters
  3. Director, Centre for Student Affairs, to ensure that disciplinary and other processes are appropriate for domestic Chinese as well as international students
  4. Dean, International Affairs, to develop international partnerships and to ensure equitable provision of service to international students
  5. Dean, Research, to ensure that appropriate staffing resources and systems are in place to support research endeavours and that research is organized and conducted ethically
  6. Dean, Teaching and Learning, to develop and maintain academic policies and procedures that satisfy both Chinese and UK statutory requirements.
