The above full time post is available 1st October 2019 (or as soon as possible thereafter, for a period of 18 months) in the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, College of Social Sciences and International Studies (SSIS) at the University of Exeter.

The College wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to participate in “A Sorcerer’s Handbook: Medieval Arabic Magic in Context,” awarded to Dr Emily Selove. This Leverhulme Trust funded post is available 01/10/2019. The successful applicant will transcribe and create draft translations of manuscripts of Sirāj al-Dīn al-Sakkākī’s Arabic grimoire, write scholarly articles about this subject, and aid the PI in editing a co-authored volume of essays about Sakkākī’s work. 

The post will include dealing with Arabic manuscripts, analysing Persian-language translations of and influences on these manuscripts, creating draft translations, writing scholarly research articles and presenting conference presentations related to these manuscripts and their contents, co-editing a volume of essays, and participating in an interdisciplinary workshop. 

About you

The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events. 

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study. The successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in medieval Arabic literature, history, culture, or science, and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies. 

The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required. Applicants will be able to read Arabic and Persian with near-fluent proficiency, navigate Arabic manuscripts and catalogues, develop original research questions, and work collaboratively with the PI.
