The Wolfson School has a long-standing reputation in low-carbon energy conversion. Research covers a wide spectrum of Optical Engineering and IC engine research, including combustion, after-treatment and optical diagnostics. Research is well funded from EPSRC, Innovate UK, Advanced Propulsion Centre and collaboration with industrial partners.

Full Project Detail:

From power generation to transport, biofuels will play an important part in our low-carbon future. As promising substitutes for fossil-fuels, their use as alternatives for automotive and aircraft applications is receiving increased attention world-wide. To take advantage of the environmental benefits of biofuels, their sustainable production and potential for emissions reduction, requires a fundamental understanding of combustion processes.

This PhD programme will focus on characteristics of particulate formation, applying state-of-the-art diagnostics to gather new data for bio-fuels and develop novel models of particulate formation to aid the design of low-emission combustion systems. The fundamental understanding of the relationship between the flame structure and emissions is not well established. The experimental and numerical studies will provide knowledge of the combustion performance of important biofuels and accelerate the development of next-generation low-emission sustainable engines.

The PhD will work closely with groups in Cambridge University and Computational Modelling Cambridge Ltd, taking part in the development of reduced-order biofuel models and optimised for industrial solutions.
