Cardiff University - Division of Infection and Immunity School of Medicine College of Biomedical and Life Sciences

Location: Cardiff
Salary: £27,025 to £31,302 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 14th August 2019
Closes: 30th August 2019
Job Ref: 8854BR

A Research Assistant position is available in the “Godkin/Gallimore” group (Professors Andrew Godkin and Awen Gallimore, Division of Infection & Immunity, The School of Medicine). Research conducted by the team examines immune responses during the development of cancer in both in vivo models and humans. The work ultimately aims to identify novel pathways to target to improve anti-cancer immune responses.

The successful applicant will join a vibrant and well-funded research environment, which includes established investigators, post-doctoral fellows and PhD students. Current activities within the laboratory span bench-to-bedside combining cell culture, genomics, and protein chemistry work.
The successful applicant will be involved in assisting the post-doctoral research associate with a project looking at ways of blocking a cell surface molecule called LAG3 with its natural ligand HLA class II molecules. LAG3 seems to regulate T cell function, is an attractive target for manipulating immune responses. We have set up a microbead-based assay looking at the kinetics of the interaction, and now wish to develop further a range of novel small molecule inhibitors of this interaction. These small molecules will then be tested in cell based assays such as LAG3 reporter cell lines, organoids, and eventually in a hLAG3 mouse model eventually.

Applicants should have good technical, organisational and communication skills, and evidence of an understanding of immunology, cell biology and/or molecular biology and the ability to fit into, and work effectively within an existing team of scientists.

For further information prospective candidates should contact Professor Andrew Godkin  (godkinaj@cardiff.ac.uk).
