For a PDRA, the starting salary will be from £30,046 up to £34,804 on Grade E, depending on qualifications and experience. For a PDRF, the starting salary will be from £35,845 up to £46,718 on Grade F, depending on qualifications and experience.

This full time, EPSRC funded post is available from 4th November 2019 for 2 years on a fixed term basis to support the work of Dr Timothy Holsgrove.   

The Post 

The successful applicant will be responsible for the development and implementation of a six-axis bioreactor to apply physiological loads to intervertebral disc cultures. This will provide unique opportunities to investigate the coupling of mechanical and biological environments relating to disc degeneration, and in the development, optimisation, and evaluation of regenerative treatments.   

The post will include: 

  • Bioreactor development 
  • In-vitro and ex-vivo testing of bovine discs 
  • Electrochemical analysis of disc during loading 
  • Disc analysis using Raman miscospectroscopy 
  • Analysis of disc cell viability 
  • A training secondment with Professor Justin Cooper-White at the University of Queensland 
  • Dissemination of research results via academic journals and conferences 
  • Dissemination of research results through industry and public engagement activities

About You 

You will: 

  • Be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically 
  • Be able to prepare proposals and applications to external bodies 
  • Possess a relevant PhD (or be nearing completion) or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study  
  • Be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes 
  • Have experience in laboratory testing in the field of bioengineering, the preparation of biological specimens, and the completion of cell-culture studies
