About the role
The School of Archaeology and Ancient History, and the Department of Mathematics, University of Leicester, are seeking to appoint Post-doctoral Research Associate for a research team for the AHRC-funded project, Arch-I-Scan.
The Associate will be tasked with carrying out research involving the digital recording, collation and analyses of Roman ceramics for Arch-I-Scan project, as part of a research team of archaeologists and mathematicians, and will be expected to contribute to the dissemination of the project results.
This project aims to develop a state-of-the art image-recognition and machine-learning service, for recording and cataloguing pottery. To this end, and in the first instance, the project team will be using handheld devices (e.g. mobile phones) to scan 100,000s of Roman complete/near complete and more fragmentary tableware remains in collections in London, Colchester, Leicester and at Vindolanda. A proof-of-concept experiment for this service was successfully carried out for the AHRC network, 'Big Data on the Roman Table'(https://intarch.ac.uk/journal/issue50/11/index.html)
You will have a completed, or near completed PhD in Roman archaeology and/or ceramic analyses in archaeology
