The University of Bristol and Bristol Robotics Laboratory invites applications for two immediate positions in the area of research, design and development of soft robotic wearable devices for physical assist and rehabilitation.

These research positions will support the activities of the University of Bristol and Bristol Robotics Laboratory on the recently awarded EPSRC project “FREEHAB: accessible, comfortable and adaptable wearable rehabilitation and assist devices” (gow.epsrc.ukri.org/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/S026096/1). This project will develop wearable soft robotic technologies which are needed for the next generation of assist and rehabilitation devices. These include smart wearable devices that are easy to put on, comfortable and which will give power assist to people as their move about their daily lives. These technologies are targeted at people with disabilities and elderly people. For example, activities such as getting up from a chair, walking upstairs, and maintaining balance becomes more difficult as we age. The proposed wearable soft robotic solutions will sense the users’ movements, internal states and the external environment and will deliver appropriate power assist through the clothing itself. Power assist will be through the use of novel soft robotic actuators such as electroactive polymers and soft artificial muscles. This work extends our ground-breaking RightTrousers project (therighttrousers.com) and aims to work closely with clinical partners to deliver prototype wearable assist device that will be used by the healthcare professionals and patients in the clinic, and which will then be taken home by the patients for self-managed rehabilitation.

The project will be based at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory (www.brl.ac.uk) the largest centre for multidisciplinary research in the UK. It will operate within the Bristol Soft Robotics Group (www.bristol.ac.uk/softlab, @SoftLabBristol), a vibrant and exciting group with over 35 members, and you will use dedicated facilities and expertise from the Robotics Lab in addition to those of the faculties of Engineering and Science at the University of Bristol and project partners.

You will hold (or will be expected to obtain soon) a strong PhD in a discipline relevant to the project. In addition to a strong research track record you will also have excellent communication and presentation skills, and the enthusiasm to develop new and imaginative wearable soft robotics.

It is anticipated that interviews will take place as soon as possible after the application deadline, with anticipated start as soon as possible thereafter. This post is full time up to 30th September 2022.

Informal enquiries can be made to: Prof Jonathan Rossiter (Jonathan.Rossiter@bris.ac.uk)

We welcome applications from all members of our community and are particularly encouraging those from diverse groups, such as members of the LGBT+ and BAME communities, to join us.
