This is an exciting opportunity for a post-doctoral research associate to join the Department of Clinical Neurosciences.
Project Title - A scaffolding strategy for stimulating opticnerve regeneration
The project focusses on regeneration of axons in the damaged spinal cord and optic nerve. The group has identified PROTRUDIN as a new and powerful stimulator of axon regeneration. Protrudin is a scaffolding molecule that links several of the key participants in regeneration, (kinesin, transport/trafficking endosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, PIP3 signalling). The molecule is activated by phosphorylation, and a phosphomimetic form of the molecule is a very powerful stimulator of regeneration in cortical neurons and in retinal ganglion cell axons in the crushed optic nerve.
The purpose of the grant is to test protrudin together with other interventions for stimulating regeneration in the corticospinal tract in the damaged spinal cord and in the visual system damaged by optic nerve crush and glaucoma. The work will also address mechanism, with the aim of learning more about how protrudin stimulates axon growth. A particular focus will be the involvement of endoplasmic reticulum in regeneration.
Applicants should have experience of in vivo experiments in the rodent nervous system.
