Do you love the idea of working for a prestigious university? Are you proactive, adaptable, creative and experienced in engineering? The Department of Mechanical Engineering has developed a need for an individual to support our Turbomachinery (‘Turbo’) research group by managing their laboratory spaces and support the design and development of test rigs and experimental research.

The Turbo group is a world-leading centre for experimental aerothermal research that works to solve real-world, and increasingly important problems such as waste heat recovery in aeroplanes, and modelling of hybrid and electric vehicles. We are constantly designing, developing and testing novel turbocharging concepts. The postholder would therefore be key in enabling advances in turbomachinery research and instrumentation.

This post will be part of the Technical Services team, and will answer to the Technical Operations Manager, however close collaboration with our Academic & Research community will be needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • You will operate, maintain and modify turbomachinery and related test rigs in support of experimental research in the Turbocharger research group.
  • You will be responsible for the hands-on management of the experimental test facilities; working with PhD students and Research Associates (RAs) who use a variety of test rigs to manage and support scheduling, safety, and instrumentation and where appropriate, the data acquisition system.
  • You will be supporting the design and development of new test rigs in collaboration with the research group.
  • You will be required to deputise for the Technical head of Thermofluids, as necessary.

Skills, knowledge and experience

  • You should have a degree in Mechanical Engineering (or a closely related discipline), a recognised apprenticeship or BTEC higher award with experience in a relevant technical or scientific role.
  • You must have practical experience in test rig development and construction
  • You should have experience dealing with different people on various levels e.g. sponsors, academics, engineers, safety officers etc.
  • You must have experience of supervision and/ or training of colleagues who are not familiar with the practical aspects of experiments.
  • Experience of LabVIEW and 3D CAD (preferably SOLIDWORKS) are essential.
