The UCL Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR) is a cross-UCL Institute, which aims to lead research, knowledge exchange, and advanced teaching in the area of risk and disaster reduction. IRDR aims to achieve leadership in risk and disaster reduction both in the UK and internationally.
The UCL Institute for Global Health (IGH) is a world-leading centre of research and teaching excellence in global health. IGH places a cross-disciplinary approach at the heart of research and teaching. Both IRDR and IGH operate across UCL’s faculties, spanning physical and environmental sciences, statistics, engineering, medicine, global health, and social sciences in order to contribute to UCL’s Grand Challenges.
We are seeking a Research Fellow to work on the three-year project “Community collective action to respond to climate change influencing the environment-health nexus” funded by the UK’s Natural Environment Research Council. The postholder will conduct extended fieldwork in Alaska and Trinidad/Tobago including interviews, participatory processes, document analyses, and archival searches as well as transcribing, coding, analyzing, interpreting, writing up, publishing, and presenting the data and results.
The post is based at UCL, 80% in the Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction and 20% in the Institute for Global Health, with the postholder contributing to the activities and events of the research team and departments.
The position runs until the project’s end on 31 December 2022 in the first instance.
We are seeking a candidate with a PhD in any discipline. They preferably have experience of searching, analysing, and synthesising the scientific literature, legal and policy documents and databases, and archives as well as designing and conducting qualitative research methods of interviews and participatory processes including transcribing and coding.
The successful applicant will have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English to a wide variety of audiences; computer and software skills; organisational and independent working skills; and research skills as well as being available to undertake extended fieldwork in Alaska and Trinidad/Tobago among other international travel.
They should be able to work collaboratively with a diversity of colleagues and students; have a commitment to high quality research; contribute to scientific and popular science dissemination; and contribute to the IRDR and IGH multidisciplinary and multi-cultural intellectual environment.
