The normal expectation is that the successful applicant will be appointed to the minimum of the scale with annual increments on 1 October each year (subject to completing six months service).

Main Purpose of the Post

The College seeks to appoint an established academic with teaching and research expertise in any field of politics and/or international relations and with proven managerial abilities.

The College is looking for an experienced academic who will take a leadership role, developing programmes, increasing student recruitment and advancing the international reputation of our research. This may include taking up the role of Head of Department from September 2020. The Head of Department role (0.5 fte) requires an interest in and knowledge of how relevant academic fields are developing nationally and internationally and the skills to line manage and inspire academic staff. The Head of Department will be a member of the College Management Board and potentially of other groups such as the Vice-Chancellor’s Leadership Engagement Forum. The Head will have time (0.5 fte) to teach, supervise and research. 

Working with managers and colleagues, the successful candidate will lead ambitious plans to increase student numbers and to exploit new opportunities in a changing student market. S/he will support and extend the continued development of teaching, postgraduate supervision, and research in Politics and International Relations in Swansea University.

The Department of Political and Cultural Studies (PCS) is an inter-disciplinary department that brings together specialists in the fields of politics, international relations, political economy and philosophy and in inter-disciplinary fields such as American Studies, War Studies, Development Studies and Cultural Studies. The department is committed to high quality, innovative and research-led teaching and to preparing graduates for the world of work. Teaching focuses primarily on building the knowledge of students, but staff also work to equip students with skills and experience that will help them in their careers.

The College welcomes candidates who can develop links with scholars and students overseas: there may be opportunities to travel and to teach for short periods overseas. There will also be opportunities to contribute to teaching and graduate supervision across the College.
