Today SIRD consists of three departments, the Department of Diplomacy, the Department of International Politics, and the Department of Political Science and Public Administration. It also publishes a Chinese language journal, International Forum, which is indexed in Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index.

SIRD has nearly 30 faculty and staff members, including 8 full professors and 14 associate and assistant professors. Every year it recruits about 120 undergraduates, 45 MA students, and 10 PhD students, making it the third largest school at BFSU. The student body is diverse, with nearly 200 international students from more than 20 countries.

SIRD combines foreign language study with political science training. It offers four undergraduate programs, Diplomacy + English, Diplomacy + French, Double Degree Diplomacy (a joint program with Keele University), and Political Science and Public Administration. Its MA and doctorate programs offer concentrations in diplomacy, international relations, comparative politics, political theory, public diplomacy, and area studies.

SIRD is committed to excellence in teaching and research. Its graduates are among the most sought after on the job market. Its faculty are frequently featured in top Chinese and English journals. It is striving to become a top destination for the best students in China and an attractive school for scholars around the world.
