Job Summary
Imperial College London is consistently rated in the top three UK university institutions. The Faculty of Natural Sciences (www.imperial.ac.uk/naturalsciences) is seeking to recruit an outstanding individual with a practical background in Chemistry, Physics or Biology to join the Faculty Health and Safety Team. You will work closely within a team of five covering all departments in the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
Duties and responsibilities
Your core responsibilities will be to carry out inspections and monitor follow up of actions, assist in the investigation of incidents, provide safety advice to staff and students and assist the safety team to develop effective policies and procedures. The role is ideally suited to an individual currently in a research, lab management or technical role who is looking to gain experience in a safety related role.
Essential requirements
You must have an appropriate academic or vocational qualification in Chemistry, Physics, Biology or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research or industrial experience. Experience in laboratory management or technical support in a scientific research group, Department or industry and knowledge and experience of safety issues associated with the laboratory environment are essential. You must also have an understanding of regulations and procedures relating to health and safety and the implications of non-compliance.
While not essential, a NEBOSH certificate or equivalent qualification would be advantageous. Knowledge of the range of activities and the safety issues that arise in an academic research environment within higher education or industry is also highly desirable. Practical health and safety training will be given where required.
In addition to the above, you will need to demonstrate excellent organisational skills, including the ability to plan ahead, set priorities and work to deadlines, together with excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be able to demonstrate a creative approach to problem solving. You will be committed to personal and professional development and we will fully support you in achieving this and in gaining expertise in safety management and any relevant technologies and techniques as required.
