The Sensor Technology Research Centre at the University of Sussex is looking for a Research Fellow to work on an innovative project funded by a large consumer electronics multi-national. This is a research-intensive role with high publication potential in the rapidly developing field of low-power electric field communication. The primary aim of the project is to develop a novel near-field capacitive communication channel based on the patented Electric Potential Sensor technology.
This is an exciting opportunity to participate in a project that may lead to commercialisation of innovative communication links for various smart wearable devices, such as transmitting music from a mobile phone or smart watch to a pair of headphones.
Your role will be to research, implement and evaluate various modulation and demodulation schemes in hardware. You will gauge their suitability for electric field near-field digital communication as well as document and characterise the advantages and disadvantages of each method for BAN (body area network) applications. This will be done using our in-house fabrication and test facilities, including a PCB milling machine and SMD soldering facility, and state of the art DC to GHz test and measurement equipment such as VNA, spectrum analysers, parameter analysers etc.
As part of the role, you will write scientific papers and contribute to monthly reports, quarterly demonstrations and contribute towards patent filing. You will be working in a core team of four to five researchers within a larger research centre.
This post suits a highly motivated individual with excellent scientific and technical skills, and a willingness to publish in high profile venues. The candidate should have significant experience in the design, fabrication, characterisation, and application of low-frequency (less than100 MHz) RF circuits as well as a willingness to operate in a dynamic research environment within an international team.
Candidates should have a PhD in physics, electronics engineering or an equivalent field combined with a very strong background in analogue communication circuit design. The candidates should have demonstrable experience and knowledge in several of the following areas: near-field communication, implementation of various modulation/demodulation schemes, capacitive sensors, antenna theory, RF circuit simulation, design and fabrication.
An established expertise in the application of research outcomes in digital communication sector and wearable devices is desirable. This project may lead to translation to ASICs carried out by the industrial partner, hence an interest in this field is advantageous.
The Sensor Technology Research Centre at the University of Sussex works on the interface between electronic engineering, computer science, and physics to develop advanced and innovative sensor systems for applications in sports, healthcare, and smart wearable electronics.
