Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University

Located in Suzhou, China, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a young, dynamic and EMI university founded in 2006, and is a unique collaborative institution and first joint-venture university in China to offer both UK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited undergraduate degrees for 103 programmes. XJTLU also aims to become truly research-led and has committed significant investment into research development and the expansion of master’s and PhD student numbers on campus. The university has over 18,000 students and more than 1000 academic staff representing in excess of 90 nationalities.

Modern Languages Centre

At XJTLU our approach to Transnational Modern Languages is focused on the languages and cultures of the Chinese-, Japanese- and Spanish-speaking worlds including diasporic communities. We give particular emphasis to a number of key areas: (i) Modern Languages for Business Purposes with immersion courses and strong links to our Business School's award-winning International Business with a Language programme: (ii) comparative and technology-enhanced pedagogies that position our work in Modern Languages continually at the innovative edges of the discipline for language teaching; (iii) the promotion of intercultural understanding and mobility in the contexts of global career opportunities.

Japanese Division (JPL)

The Japanese language programme was established in 2019. All lecturers have specific training in the teaching of Japanese as a foreign or second language, and have obtained masters and PhD degrees along with many years of teaching experience at a university level. Students can study in a variety of ways depending on their programme requirements or individual needs. There are offerings for students at all skill levels, from beginner to advanced, and students may choose from intensive or extensive five-credit or 10-credit modules. Course content is student-centred practice on critical Japanese language skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking whilst covering useful and relevant topics. Our lecturers are well regarded and are happy to support students as much as possible.

Position Description

The position of Head of Division (HoDiv) is crucial to the effective operation of the Japanese Division in the Modern Languages Centre (MLC) within the School of Languages. The HoDiv is the most important communication link between MLC and the individual member of academic staff. The HoDiv is responsible to the Director of MLC for the entire operation of the Division and the professional behaviour of each individual member of staff. The HoDiv is a key leader, manager and administrator without which the Division cannot function. The successful candidate will be appointed as Head of Japanese Division for a minimum of two years.

This is a management role with some teaching responsibilities. This opportunity is for experienced Language Lecturer in Japanese candidates in mid-late career stage, who could be appointed to a Language Lecturer or Senior Language Lecturer position, commensurate with experience. The opportunity is oriented to those candidates who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and who can bring a sense of vision and considerable management / team leadership experience to our fast-growing Japanese division. Successful candidates will be appointed as Head of Japanese Division for a minimum of two years.


Ability to communicate in English (this is the working language of the university), in addition to management / team leadership experience is a must. Due to visa regulations, applicants must be Chinese or Japanese. Successful candidates will manage a team of around 10 language lecturers and oversee a cohort of 1000 students. Preference may be given to applicants already residing in China.

Responsibilities and Duties

There will be opportunities for Japanese language lecturer to be involved in a range of different types of delivery, including:
•    Compulsory credit-bearing Japanese language modules on the university’s “International Business with a Language” BA degree programme, which allows students to study Japanese continuously through their degree up to CEFR B2 level  
•    Optional credit-bearing Japanese language modules available to undergraduate students
•    Out-of-class Japanese language support activities
As we expand the Japanese language offering at XJTLU we would also look to offer the following in future:
•    Japanese language courses that are an optional component of postgraduate degrees
•    Coordination of content for an overseas summer Japanese immersion programme in Japan

There will also be the opportunity for a member of the Japanese teaching team to take on a managerial role with responsibility for the coordination and leadership of the Japanese teaching programmes. Additionally, there are opportunities for all staff to develop their careers by taking on wider managerial and administrative roles, as well as by contributing to both School of Language and university-level committees. All managerial, administrative and committee roles are appointed to on a fixed-term basis, thus providing all staff members with a range of options to take on responsibilities in areas that interest them. 

Essential Qualifications/Experience
Successful applicants should be educated to Master’s degree level in a relevant area (e.g. Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language), and should have at least two years of post-master’s relevant teaching experience, preferably at university level. Additionally, applicants should have a good standard of written and spoken English, as this is the working language of the university. 

Desirable Qualifications/Experience
We are particularly interested in receiving applications from teachers with experience of setting up Japanese teaching programmes or being involved with the establishment of Japanese programmes at an early stage of their development. Applicants who can demonstrate an interest in either or both of the following areas: Technology enhanced learning; Assessment, syllabus and materials design are also particularly welcome.

Compensation Package

Members of Academic Staff are entitled to subsidies for accommodation, travel, and children’s educational, medical insurance. A one-time relocation allowance is also provided. Overseas staff may receive a tax “holiday,” depending on nationality and personal circumstances.

Citizenship and Visa Regulations

Employment at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is regulated by Chinese Labour Laws, and must comply with the regulations of the provincial government. These regulations stipulate who is eligible for legal employment with regard to obtaining work permits and visas. Please be advised candidates over 60 may be not eligible for PRC work visa.
