The Department of Computer Science is seeking to recruit a number of Associate Lecturers on a 24-month fixed-term basis to support all aspects of teaching and learning for online programmes in the Department.

Department The online MSc courses offered by the Department of Computer Science at the University of York are an established set of programmes with exciting plans to grow. Currently the four main themes within these programmes are: foundations of computer science; data analytics; artificial intelligence; and cyber security.  We are looking at enthusiastic educators to help drive the programmes forward, and enthuse our students during their learning journey. Role

  • To be responsible for the delivery of teaching across a range of modules and/or within a particular theme of the programme
  • To work as a team of tutors being responsive to both student and tutor needs, encouraging a supportive and inclusive culture
  • To support students whose first language may not be English, and from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines
  • To develop and apply innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students
  • To carry out on-going curriculum review, including module content and materials and contribute to the development of teaching and learning strategies
  • To undertake effectively a range of administrative responsibilities

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed

  • Postgraduate degree in Computer Science is essential
  • PhD in a suitable area is desirable
  • Knowledge in a broad range of Computer Science subjects relevant to the online programmes and sufficient to develop teaching and provide relevant learning support to students across different levels of academic ability
  • A range of teaching experience that may include post 16 and/or HE at undergraduate and/ or postgraduate level or an evidenced similar context
  • Support distance learners including students whose first language may not be English, and students from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines, encouraging inclusivity.
  • To support on campus programmes with lectures, lead seminars, tutorials and other forms of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities when required.
  • To provide – with mentoring - supervision to students, giving advice on study skills and helping with learning problems.
  • To investigate, develop and apply innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide-ranging audience, both orally and in writing, using a range of media
  • Creativity, initiative and judgement in applying appropriate approaches to teaching and learning support


This post is available on a fixed term basis for 24 months.
