Senior Drug Discovery Scientist (Structural Biology / Biophysics)

University of Dundee

Within the University of Dundee, the newly announced Centre for Targeted Protein Degradation (CeTPD) is being created as a first of its kind Centre leading a number of internationally significant projects in the burgeoning new area of translational chemical biology and targeted protein degradation. The goal of CeTPD is to innovate the next-generation of small-molecule platforms and modalities to advance chemical and biological insights and therapeutic targets related to human diseases. It aspires to achieve this by openly collaborating with academic, industrial and venture partners, and by training and inspiring the next-generation of research scientists and leaders.

We are seeking to appoint a Senior Scientist to join our expanding group based at the University of Dundee in the new Centre for Targeted Protein Degradation (CeTPD), due to open in early 2022. The focus of this new role will be to drive and accelerate degrader drug discovery projects within a multi-disciplinary drug discovery team engaged in structure based PROTAC design in an exciting collaboration between the University of Dundee and Boehringer Ingelheim. The joint team’s mission is to discover novel small-molecule degraders to treat cancers with serious unmet medical needs. There is significant scope for the successful candidate to develop and augment discipline-based activities to support the on-going discovery efforts of this collaboration team, as well as of the wider CeTPD group.

Your priorities will include:

  • Accountable for whole multi-disciplinary project performance and delivery in line with collaboration objectives, including meeting key project and financial milestones.
  • Use a depth and breadth of biophysical assay development and structural determination experience and knowledge to provide creative solutions that will drive projects forward.
  • Lead the preparation and presentation of project updates/reviews to both collaboration joint steering committee and collaborator internal research portfolio committee meetings.
  • Significantly contribute to the quality and delivery of mentorship and training of junior medicinal chemists across the CeTPD.
  • Lead implementation of best practices within own discipline across all CeTPD teams.

Who we’re looking for:

  • Ph.D in structural biology or a related discipline OR a degree in chemistry or biology with additional relevant experience in industry.
  • Significant experience as a senior member of drug discovery projects, defining team strategy.
  • Track record of intellectually and practically driving the characterization of ligand:protein interactions to push forward drug discovery projects.
  • Demonstrated high level performance in scientific leadership, communication and strategy to deliver project goals.
  • Experience in using state-of-the-art structural determination techniques which may include x-ray, Cryo-EM , ,NMR and/or HDX-MS.
