The Role

Macquarie University seeks a Lecturer (Level B) with specialist knowledge of intelligence studies. The successful applicant will be expected to: make a major contribution to research; develop and convene units in intelligence studies at postgraduate and undergraduate levels; supervise postgraduate students; engage with relevant stakeholders in government and industry, including through externally-funded projects; and make contributions to the administration of the Department, Faculty and University.

You will have completed or be near completion of a PhD in a discipline relevant to intelligence studies and have a promising record of high-quality research.  You will also have: a forward-looking research agenda and a plan for funding it; a record of engaged teaching in classrooms and online; a collegial approach to succeed within an interdisciplinary and international environment.

The Department of Security Studies and Criminology (SSC), within the Faculty of Arts, offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses, expert seminars, and opportunities for research. SSC draws together senior academic and industry professionals specialising in research, theory and practice associated with security, and the protection of both the national interest and the rights of individuals and groups within society. The intelligence studies stream incorporates researchers with different disciplinary and professional orientations, ranging from tradecraft elaboration, to social scientific investigation and critical theory and history, bridging professional, theoretical and public interests. Our areas of interest include national-security intelligence, law-enforcement intelligence, regulatory and corporate intelligence, information warfare, theory of intelligence, and critical intelligence studies.

Essential:

  • PhD completed or near completion in a relevant discipline; 
  • Success in producing high-quality research in the area of intelligence studies;
  • Ability to teach units across different themes within intelligence studies at undergraduate and postgraduate level including the ability to develop scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, including in an online environment;
  • Ability to supervise graduate students;
  • Record of contributing to administrative service in a University or professional setting;
  • Record of enhancing, or capacity to enhance, the University's reputation through engagement with relevant external stakeholders.

Desirable:

  • Demonstrated success in attracting research grants;
  • Relevant professional experience outside academia.
