Division of Biosciences
We seek to appoint up to three new Lecturer/Associate Professor posts in the Centre for Biodiversity and Environment Research (CBER) within the Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment (GEE) at UCL’s new East campus in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. You will have expertise in the general field of quantitative ecology and be a highly motivated academic seeking the opportunity to build your career at one of the world’s top universities—one who’s ethos is that excellence should go together with enriching society.
The appointments will join CBER’s new People and Nature Laboratory at UCL East—an exciting cross-disciplinary partnership that brings together GEE researchers with those from the UCL Departments of Computer Science; Geography; Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering; and The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment. This unique interdisciplinary environment will develop innovative approaches to tackle the challenges posed by biodiversity loss, global ecosystem degradation and climate change, to support a more sustainable relationship between people and nature.
We are particularly keen to build our expertise in the following areas:
Statistics, data science, mathematics or computer science as applied to understanding how anthropogenic change impacts biodiversity and ecosystems, Design and use of innovative technologies to understand wildlife population changes (such as Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence, genetics and genomics, sensor systems), Design and use of citizen science approaches and methodologies to study ecological and socio-ecological systems.
The appointments will complement and build on our existing research and teaching strengths in genetics, evolution, and the environment (see https://www.ucl.ac.uk/biosciences/gee), and will be closely aligned to our two new masters programmes launching in 2022: MSc in Ecology and Data Science and MSc Citizen Science, there will also be opportunity to contribute to GEE’s wider portfolio of undergraduate and graduate teaching.
Representing the single biggest expansion in UCL’s history, it’s an exciting opportunity to be part of our new state-of-the-art campus: UCL East, dedicated to finding solutions to the biggest global challenges, thinking across academic disciplines and beyond academic walls.
The successful candidates will have a PhD or equivalent, a strong research portfolio in quantitative ecology that is linked to the People and Nature Lab’s activities, and previous research-based teaching experience.
You will have a doctoral degree in a relevant field, ability to undertake and publish internationally excellent research supported by a proven track record in research-based teaching, with a strong interest in interdisciplinary working, translational activity, and widening participation. All activities undertaken within this role need to be approached and delivered in a way that demonstrates the University’s commitment to Equality and Diversity for staff, students, and partners.
Additional criteria for Associate Professor Grade 9: outstanding international research profile with substantial and sustained contributions to knowledge or other outcomes appropriate to the discipline. Evidence of contributions to peer review bodies/committees, professional organisations, learned societies, government committees or Research Councils etc. Evidence of academic leadership and a proven ability to lead, develop and motivate colleagues.

|Salary:||The salary range will be Grade 8: £45,610 - £53,757 per annum or Grade 9: £58,404 - £63,483 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.|
