Assistant Professor

University of Cambridge - Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology

Location: Cambridge
Salary: £42,149 to £53,348
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 3rd November 2021
Closes: 4th January 2022
Job Ref: NQ28717

The Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor (University Lecturer) from October 2022 or sooner. Once probation has been successfully completed, you will be designated as an Associate Professor.

The successful candidate will be expected to lead a world renowned research group and contribute to the teaching needs of the Department. Teaching and research duties will be split approximately 30:70. It is important that the selected candidate will be willing and able to teach and examine widely across the existing Chemical Engineering Tripos. A strong track record in teaching would be desirable and a willingness to teach in areas outside the candidate's research expertise is essential.

The Department wishes to appoint a researcher in the field of Biotechnology. This is a deliberately wide definition to appeal to broad spread of applicants and ensure accessibility for under-represented groups. The particular area of research is expected to fall within one of the strategic themes of the Department. Priority will be given to those research areas identified by the 2018 Strategic Research Review, namely:

(i) Bioprocessing, (ii) Chemical Engineering (focusing on Energy), (iii) the energy-materials interface or (iv) Mathematics/Biology/Engineering interface (focusing on Big data and/or personalized Medicine).

The ideal candidate would be someone with an excellent research record as evidenced by publications in top journals. They will foster their subject through research, supported by external grant funding, leading to publications in respected international journals. They will support teaching, supervision and examining at undergraduate and graduate levels.

Administrative duties are shared equitably among the teaching members of the Department and the post holder is encouraged to accept appointment to wider University and departmental committees. The department has an active Wellbeing Committee, Athena Swan and Green Committees.

Applications should include the following:

 - A covering letter.

 - A curriculum vitae which includes a publications list and areas of teaching competence.

 - A statement of research interest and future research plans.

 - Two samples of recent work (not exceeding 20,000 words in total).

 - Contact details for three professional referees

We will request references at the long listing stage. Full details about the interviews and final selection process will be sent to shortlisted candidates. The interview process is planned for Lent 2022.
